Hello Ladies, and gentlemen too!

I wanted to send you all a Happy Mothers Day greeting and to give you a projects update. I hope you are spending this day in a way that's perfect for you, all the while being appreciated, loved, and celebrated.

It's truly magical at Mrs. Colonial right now.

The gardens are beautiful as they burst with new life offering a new look as elements continue to grow and change. I spent much of yesterday planting new boxwood and other plants in the courtyard.

One of my future projects is to build a new pergola back here to offer some relief from the amazing sun this area receives. I scoped out where the new footings would go so I could get these boxwood in now and give them a chance to take hold and begin to mature right away. This area was hit big with voles last years which lead me to have to pull everything that is around the raised patio out. I'm installing these Winter Gem boxwood in gopher baskets to prevent their tender roots from being munched on.

The new event space continued to progress this past week. We are officially done with tree removal, grading and filling of the site.

Proposed design of the new event space at Mrs. Colonial's Rock Haven Farm

My landscape designer and I have started putting together ideas for the finishes in the space. The proposed idea above was put together to keep with the black and white theme here on the farm. It may be too theme specific for weddings? What do you think? Should we go with it, or should we make it less site specific and more subtle/generic to work for all styles of weddings, etc.?

Bees at the farm: this week on instagram I shared the state of the bee situation in one of our columns and how we had an expert out to remove them.

Honey bees in a column at Mrs. Colonial

When he opened the column he was so impressed. He said our bees were robust and extremely healthy. He said he had never seen a mass of bees so large. He estimated that we had at least 100,000 bees, so many that he requested I purchase a second brood box for my hive so when he returned them there would be plenty of space.

The plan was to have him take them away to get them to begin establishing new honeycomb in my hive frames, and then to bring them back in a few weeks. We had scheduled to have the bees returned on Saturday and placed in my FlowHive. The mister and I were soooooo excited to have our bees back to thrive in our garden.

Did they make it back to the farm? No, in fact, they didn't MAKE IT at all. On Friday evening I received a call from the bee expert telling me our bees didn't make it. I was stunned and confused. Our bees were so important to us. Apparently, he hadn't checked in on them the entire time he had them, until the evening before they were set to return. He said there was no queen, no eggs, very few bees, and only three frames had any amount of comb at all. His only explanation was that it had rained for a few days after he took them off site and he suggestged that was the cause of them not to make it. How could a bee expert with decades of experience take a thriving, strong hive away and lose them? It didn't make sense. It might sound dramatic, but I felt so violated. I entrusted him with our bees and suddenly they were no longer alive? None of it made sense. Did they infact not make it due to the rain? He is an incompetent bee professional? It was the end of season for swarms and there were more people wanting them than were available, did he sell our bees to make money and just told me they didn't make it? I don't think I'll ever know. But I do know we're very bummed and disappointed.

Ok, let's focus on something more positive.

Did you see my obsession with scallops on IG this past week?

Shopping guide for furniture and decor with scallops by Mrs. Colonial

I am truly obsessed at the moment. I purchased three of the plaid chairs in a different colorway for our lake house. I'll be going up there tonight to meet my electrician on Monday. If you'd like to see them in another color, just let me know and I'll show you a video when I'm there. They are absolutely perfect at our game table.

Each week I'll be putting together a shopping guide with links to all products. You can always find the latest guide on the main page of my website, or eventually at the "shop" tab. If there is anything in particular you'd like me to put into a future shopping guide, just let me know. I'd be happy to do it.

Again, Happy Mothers Day! I truly hope you're having a fantastic day. Depending on what time you read this post, I'll either be in my daughter's cycle class with my family, eating brunch made by my son, playing pickle ball and tennis, planting a few more boxwood, having dinner with family in Healdsburg, or driving to the lake. I have a full day and I'm so excited to spend it all with the Mister and my kids.

Love to you all!

Sandy, and Mrs. Colonial too!

PS: A very special Happy Mothers Day to Beverly Sheldon, A.K.A. Grandma
